Aim before wattage
Light the ground, not the horizon.
A floodlight aimed too high throws most of its output over the fence, leaves the path in shadow and puts glare into the eyes of anyone approaching — including you.
Aimed down and slightly out from the eave, the same fitting lights the driveway properly and stops at the boundary.

Sensors
They trigger on movement across, not towards.
Aimed straight down a path, a sensor lets someone get close before it fires. Aimed across the approach, it catches them early — which is the entire point.
The other common fault is triggering on the street, a washing line or a palm in the wind, which is how a security light becomes a light everyone ignores.
