When it is needed
Old cable does not fail gradually.
Vulcanised rubber insulation was standard for decades before PVC. It is organic, it perishes, and a Queensland roof space accelerates that considerably. The insulation hardens, cracks and eventually leaves the conductor bare.
The green residue people notice at switches and power points is the symptom. The problem is that the insulation producing it has stopped insulating.

What it involves
Disruptive, but done once.
A full rewire replaces the cabling throughout, and in almost every case the switchboard with it — a board of that vintage will be in the same condition as everything else.
Where a house is being renovated anyway, doing it at the same time is far less painful than coming back afterwards. Where it is occupied, we work room by room and tell you honestly what each day looks like.

Usually yes. We work in stages and tell you which rooms are affected each day, and when the power will be off.
Not always. Partial rewires make sense where only part of the installation has failed. We tell you which situation you are in after looking.
Almost always. A board of that era will be in the same condition as the cable.
Some access is unavoidable. We keep it to a minimum, tell you where it will be before starting, and leave the site tidy.
