What moves the number
The tank is the smallest part of it.
Two houses replacing the same size cylinder can land a long way apart. Access is usually why: a tank in an open exterior alcove and one wedged into a cupboard behind a laundry door are very different mornings.
The existing circuit, whether the tariff arrangement changes, and whether the old unit can be carried out or has to be dismantled all count too.
What a quote covers
One fixed price, everything in it.
- Assessment of the existing tank, circuit and position
- Supply and installation of the replacement system
- Removal and disposal of the old cylinder
- Any circuit or switchboard work the new unit needs
- Controlled-load tariff arrangements where they apply
- Testing, certification and documentation
- $200 off an accepted and completed hot water changeover
Repair or replace
Sometimes the cheapest job is the smaller one.
If the tank is sound and reasonably young, an element or thermostat replacement may be all you need — and we will say so rather than sell you a cylinder.
If it is near the end of its life, a repair buys a short extension before you replace it anyway. Knowing which is which is the whole point of looking first.
