What actually differs
An AC fan runs directly off mains power and is typically controlled by a wall switch with three or four speeds. A DC fan converts the supply and drives a different motor, which gives finer speed control and runs more quietly.
- DC motors are noticeably quieter, particularly at low speed.
- DC fans usually offer more speeds and a genuinely slow bottom speed.
- DC fans draw less power for the same air movement.
- AC fans are simpler and cheaper, and we still fit them when that is what you have asked for.
Why it matters most in bedrooms
In a Brisbane bedroom the fan runs most of the night for most of the year. The two things you notice are the noise at the speed you actually use, and whether the lowest speed is slow enough to sit under without being buffeted.
That is where DC earns its keep. A cheap AC fan on its lowest setting is often still too fast and too loud to sleep under, which is why people end up turning it off and opening a window.
The case is most obvious in a bedroom, but it does not disappear anywhere else — a living-room or hallway fan still runs quieter and slower on DC. That is why DC is what we recommend throughout, not only where you sleep.
Remote or wall control
DC fans are usually supplied with a remote, and many can also be wall controlled. If you want a wall control rather than a remote that gets lost in the bedding, say so before installation — retrofitting it later can mean opening the wall.
Where a fan replaces an existing one, the existing wall control often will not suit the new motor. We check what is on the wall as part of quoting.
Installing and replacing
Replacing like for like is straightforward where the existing mounting is sound. New installations need a fixing point that can carry the load and a circuit to feed it, which is where the job occasionally grows.
Fans in bedrooms, living areas and outdoor spaces all have different requirements — an outdoor-rated fan is not the same product as an indoor one, and mounting it under an unroofed patio is not the same as mounting it in a hallway.
