Extrusion is not optional
The channel is what makes it look built-in.
Strip stuck straight to a surface shows every individual diode and throws light everywhere. Seated into aluminium extrusion with a diffuser, the same strip becomes an even line of light with the source hidden.
The extrusion also acts as a heatsink, which is most of why a properly installed run outlasts a taped-up one.

Where the driver goes
Plan the boring end first.
Every run needs a driver, and the driver needs somewhere accessible to live — because it is the part most likely to need attention years later. Buried behind sealed joinery is a decision you regret once.
Runs also have length limits before voltage drop shows as one end being dimmer than the other, which is a planning question rather than a product one.

Yes, with a dimmer matched to the driver. Mismatched pairs are the usual cause of flicker.
Voltage drop over a long run. It is solved by planning the runs and feed points rather than by a brighter strip.
Yes, using strip and extrusion rated for the exposure. Standard indoor strip does not last outdoors.
Somewhere accessible — it is the part most likely to need attention later, so sealing it inside joinery is a bad idea.
