Fixed price, not by the hour.

An hourly rate makes the tradesperson's time your risk. A fixed price moves that risk back where it belongs — onto the person who is supposed to know how long the job takes.

Updated August 2026

What is wrong with the hourly model

When you are charged by the hour, you find out what the job costs after it is finished. You are also, whether anyone intends it or not, paying for the slow option: for the trip to the wholesaler, for working it out on the job, for the part that went in twice.

It puts you in the uncomfortable position of watching the clock in your own house, and it makes it impossible to compare two quotes honestly, because neither of them is actually a quote.

How we do it instead

We look at the job, then give you a fixed price for the work described. You agree to that number before anything starts, and that is the number you pay.

If the job turns out to be more involved than it looked, that is our problem, not yours — provided the scope has not changed. If it has genuinely changed, we stop and talk to you before doing anything, rather than adding it to the invoice.

  • You know the number before the work starts.
  • Efficiency is our incentive, not your cost.
  • Two quotes can be compared properly, because both are prices for the same outcome.
  • No stopwatch, and no surprise at the end.

Why we quote on site

Most quoting happens at your place, because a fixed price is only honest if the person giving it has seen what they are quoting on. The switchboard, the access, the age of the wiring and the state of the ceiling space all change a job.

A number given over the phone without any of that is a guess, and guesses get revised upwards once someone is standing in your roof space.

For very simple work we can often be more direct over the phone. For anything involving the board, the cabling or the ceiling, we come and look.

What to ask whoever you get in

  • Is this a fixed price for the work, or an estimate that can move?
  • What is included, and what would be treated as extra?
  • What happens if it turns out to be more work than expected?
  • Will the work be tested, certified and documented?
  • Can I see your licence?

The answers tell you most of what you need to know, whoever you end up using.

For very simple work, often. For anything involving the switchboard, cabling or ceiling space, we come and look — a fixed price is only honest if we have seen the job.

It is a price for an outcome rather than for time, so it can be compared properly against another quote for the same outcome. That is the point of it.
