Repair or replace
On an older system, replacement is usually the better outcome. Efficiency has moved a long way, parts for older units get scarce, and money spent repairing a system near the end of its life buys a short extension rather than a solution.
We will tell you honestly which situation you are in. Repair-heavy diagnostic work on ageing systems is not where we add much value, and pretending otherwise wastes your money.
The pipework question
The refrigerant lines between the indoor and outdoor units are the thing that decides whether a swap is simple. Existing pipework can often be reused if it is the right size, in good condition, and suitable for the refrigerant the new system uses.
Where it is undersized, damaged, or not suitable, it gets replaced — and that means access through walls or along the outside of the house. It is the single most common reason a straightforward-looking replacement grows.
We check the pipework before quoting rather than discovering it on installation day.
The circuit
A new system may draw differently from the one it replaces, and older installations sometimes have air conditioning sharing a circuit with other things. A dedicated circuit is the right answer, and on older boards that can mean switchboard work.
Being electricians as well as installers means we handle both parts rather than leaving you to arrange a sparky separately.
The old unit leaving
An old system cannot simply be cut off the wall. The refrigerant has to be recovered by someone licensed to handle it, the unit decommissioned, and the whole lot disposed of properly.
That is included when we replace a system. You do not end up with an outdoor unit sitting beside the house waiting for a trip to the tip.
Also worth knowing: the wall behind the old head unit will not match the paint around it. A decade of sun does that. Worth planning for if the room matters to you.
