Why the pin is bigger
It is a physical lock, not a design choice.
A 15-amp plug will not fit a standard 10-amp socket because the earth pin is wider. That is deliberate: it stops equipment drawing more current than the circuit behind the outlet can safely carry.
Filing down the pin to make it fit is something people genuinely do. It defeats the one safeguard standing between the appliance and an overloaded circuit.

What it needs behind it
A dedicated circuit, rated for the load.
A 15-amp outlet is not a 10-amp outlet with a different faceplate. It needs cable and protection rated for the current, and usually its own circuit back to the board.
On an older board that can mean the board is the real job — which we will tell you before you buy the caravan hookup, not after.
