Switchboard Upgrades
Switchboards are the hub of everything electrical in your house. Older switchboards generally have outdated circuit protection devices like fuses or circuit breakers. These days it is mandatory to have all new circuits 32A and under protected by an RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent) circuit breaker.
An RCBO is the combination of a circuit breaker and an RCD (Residual Current Device) in one device, giving you and your family the maximum protection against electrocution and house fires. A switchboard upgrade will either entail replacing the entire switchboard and upgrading all circuits to RCBO’s, or alternatively keeping the board enclosure and just replacing all the circuits to RCBO’s.
A good rule of thumb to know if you need an upgrade is, if you have fuses in your board, you know the circuit protection is very outdated and your family and household are at increased risk.
Mains Upgrades
Upgrades are required when the maximum demand exceeds the current rating of existing consumer mains, particularly in older houses. These days it is standard for most households to have 16mm2 mains cabling to accommodate our modern electrical devices, as opposed to the older style 6mm2 cables.
Large single phase equipment may require an upgrade of single phase power to not overload existing consumer mains. Some equipment may also require 3-phase power to operate, prompting the need for a 3 phase mains upgrade.
